We often hear the phrase “things are getting out of hand” regarding the frequent use of social media applications, but with this latest news, things have actually gotten out of hands.
Snapchat, the teenagers’ teenage love, one of the most used applications and almost a routine for youngsters has brought one of the most bizarre news from its platform. Last year’s report by the American Academy of Facial Plastic and Reconstructive surgery has blown our minds away.
Snapchat dysmorphia Is A Real Thing!
It’s not the first time that weird social media news came rushing towards us. Lately, we had news in which deaths occurred due to selfie craze, trending social media challenges and other tons of strange things. To be precise, weird things happening on the internet comes every now and then.
But today’s international news has triggered a warning all over social media and especially for a youngster who might be suffering from such indescribable craze of ‘Snapchat looks’.
According to the American Academy of Facial Plastic and Reconstructive surgery, last year 55 percent surgeons reported having patients that demands somewhat similar surgeries. The statics are pretty alarming because it’s disturbing to even for the surgeon to witness such urge among youngsters to get under the knife, just for the sake of ‘snapchat-worthy looks’.
An Increase Of 13 Percent Of People With Snapchat Dysmorphia Was Reported This Year:
The situation was surely alarming last year, but the reason why this state can be seen all over the internet is the apparent increase in its percentage. To be honest, it isn’t something unexpected, people have gone crazy on the internet. For instance, lets focus on the ‘kiki challenge’ happening currently. Every time I open Facebook, Instagram or snapchat application, I see people performing this ‘dance with the car’ challenge on road, without even caring about the fast-moving cars passing by.
And don’t even get me started on the Snapchat craze, if you go out with your friends on a lunch there’s always going to be that ‘one friend’ who will snapchats the entire time you guys are together. Trust me, I’m always this (tiny) close to snatch their phone and smash them on the wall!
Snapchat Dysmorphia Isn’t A clinically Diagnosed Condition But It’s Making More Damage Than Expected
Although this weird syndrome/condition isn’t clinically proven yet but according to dermatologist and surgeons, the condition is generating vast damage.
If you still don’t believe how alarming the situation is now, read what this dermatologist has to say about the recent demands coming from its patients.
According to Neelam Vashi, a professor of dermatology, Sometimes I have patients who say, ‘I want every single spot gone and I want it gone by this week or I want it gone tomorrow,‘ because that’s what this filtered photograph (SnapChat filtered) gave them,” Vashi told the Post. “That’s not realistic. I can’t do that.“ is what I reply to them.
These Filtered Images Can Toll One’s Self-Esteem:
Now that we know that this condition is actually existing and it’s extremely dangerous as well, we need to address the elephant in the room.
While its true that excessive use of the internet has given birth to weird conditions but when it comes to Snapchat, the filtered images have done all the damage.
Although I’m not an avid user of the madly-love social media application, to be honest, whenever I click my selfies in those perfectly designed filters. I automatically find myself 101 percent more attractive. Plus, who doesn’t want to look good?
But this extreme urge to look good, isn’t restricted to Snapchat online only. People are demanding to look like the one they look through the Snapchat filter.
Although These Filters Makes You Look Super-cute But It’s Super-damaging As well:
One of my favorite and the widely used Snapchat filter is the wide-eyed cute looking filter that automatically makes you look 10 years younger and almost like a doll. According to recent reports, people have demanded to surgeons to make them look like that in real life.
This super creepy news has triggered me and I want it to spread like fire and have an impactful effect on the disturbed youngsters and snapchatters.
